2010 Camping Goals PDF Print E-mail

I was thinking the other day about camping.

Well, I think about camping a lot, but this was a little more specific. What sorts of things do I want to accomplish in 2010 from a camping standpoint? My son gets more and more excited about overnight trips, and the love of the outdoors is certainly something I want to impart. I started to put together a list of what camping-related activities I wanted to complete this year. The weather is starting to warm up, and our first trip should be right around the corner. Here is what I have so far:

  • Catch a fish worth eating
  • Sleep under the stars, and actually know what they are
  • Camp from my motorcycle on a 1000-mile trip
  • Get our money's worth out of our annual state parks pass
  • Teach my son to start a camp fire
  • Get my wife to take at least one camping trip with us
  • Learn at least two new recipes from another camper
  • Plan our annual "CEJ" camping trip
  • Plan a second "CEJ Families" camping trip
  • Canoe a river
  • Make enough jerky that we don't have to buy it for camping
  • Try out at least two pieces of equipment that I wouldn't normally buy
  • Build a photo album (paper, not electronic) of trips that we take
  • Camp overnight in Canada

This isn't a complete list, of that I'm sure. Just some ideas to shoot for during this camping season. What sorts of goals are you setting for yourself?

Fun post! I think I have quite a few ideas of my own for things I'd like to try outdoors with my two sons, but I hadn't put them down on paper yet. I'll have to give this a try.

  • Ollie

Thanks Debi. I am hoping that if I write them down (especially in a public forum like CEJCamping), I have a little more incentive to make good on my promises to myself. Good luck with your own goals!

That's a really great list - I particularly like the photo album idea, which is one that I've been kicking around for a few months. I really think if I had a few analog (heh) photo albums around, everybody would really enjoy looking at the pictures.

With all of our photos on the computer, they just don't get viewed, much.

Thanks Roy. I think that we're going to look into some of the online photo album publishers and see if we can recommend one which will take some of those 'lectric fottergrafs and turn them into something a little more tangible.

  • Marc  - Here is my list (as of today(

Ok, I'll play along and add my list in hopes of getting the extra incentive necessary from making them public.

    1. Learn how to fillet the fish that is good enough to eat that I hope to catch.
    2. Squeeze in as many family camping trips as we can between all of the sports the boys are enrolled in.
    3. Get the kids to the top of the Devil's Head Lookout Tower to meet Fire Ranger Bill.
    4. Summit at least one new 14'er.
    5. Join a camping/hiking group/club or whatever you call it. I really want to get back into more adventurous trips, but its just too dangerous to go out solo and the only people I know and trust to do these types of activities with simply live too far away. So, I need to add some new friends.
    6. Attend the annual CEJCamping trip that Ollie plans and eat as much of the jerky as I can. :0

  • Eric  - Great List

Love the list. On my list, I have
    1. StarGazing with a telescope
    2. Bring my kids to a real ocean beach, not the lakeside stuff they're used to
    3. Convince my wife that camping is awesome (I convinced her to come out with us last year)
    4. I too will eat some of that jerky!

    Eric

  • Doug  - Time for my list

    OK, my turn:

    1. Take at least one family camping trip (outside of using the in-law's RV at Clay's Park).
    2. Take at least one "boys only" tent camping trip - preferably more than one night - with Jason (12) and Danny (6).
    3. Attend CEJ trip (and yes, eat my share of jerky!).
    4. Use our backyard fire ring for more camp recipes at home.

  • Dipper  - My 2 pennies

First and foremost my list has:

    1. New, non-melted boots (it always seems like a good idea to warm up my feet next to the fire).

    and for the rest...

    2. Catch a fish instead of just feeding them worms off the hook. I don't even care if it's a minnow!

    3. Take the boys out at least 2 times this year.

    4. Fiddle with 1 new recipe over the open fire (possibly ribs...mmmmmmm, ribs. OR seafood; even if it is just a minnow!)

    5. Fatten myself up on O's jerky.
