I have the great pleasure of being in charge of the camping gear purchase for my son this holiday season. He has been begging me for weeks for a compass, and I've been putting him off with the old standby, "It's too close to Christmas for me to buy you anything right now." Meanwhile, I'm as giddy as the proverbial schoolgirl to get him some camping gear that he'll enjoy and will resurrect his joy that started to sprout last Spring.

The Ten Essentials list was created by a climbing organization (The Mountaineers) to help make sure people would have the basic tools necessary to respond to unforeseen events while out hiking, camping, hunting, etc. The list includes items that you should always have with you when you go to enjoy the outdoors. In our last poll, we provided a list of 11 categories and asked which one is not on the list, and the correct answer was: Communication.

If you're reading this blog, chances are you're like us: you love taking your family out camping and cherish the memories you create each time you head out. You probably even have any number of photos, capturing the ever expanding outdoor adventures of your family. Your kids first hike, the first fish they caught, first deer bagged, first peak bagged, etc. But have you ever thought about the sense of terror that would rip out your gut if you logged onto your computer to look through your family pictures, but instead only found an empty file structure? Just a shell sitting there, allowing you to click through them, staring unbelievably at empty folders. Yep, you guessed it. That happened to me tonight. Fortunately, my terror was minimized as I had just recently finished backing up all of our family photos on SmugMug.com.

Some of the most important things to get right in order to enjoy a backpacking trip include: have the right gear for you, staying dry (as much as possible), being prepared, and packing wisely. Packing your backpack well is important for your comfort and injury prevention while on the trail. Exactly what is meant by 'wisely' though depends on a number of factors; including your pack and where you plan to hike.

Looking for data and information on local trails? Or maybe your heading out on a vacation and want to find a nearby trail to hit while there? Sure, you can do a Google search, scan through the results, or maybe even read through some of them. But, maybe there's a better way. While aimlessly wondering around the net this evening, I somehow found myself on a site that has a terrific table full of data on hiking trails.
