As Ollie mentioned in his previous post, we’re getting back in the groove of things as our next trip approaches. This one is a high-elevation adventure, hiking in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Since most of us are “low-landers” from Ohio, Michigan, and PA, respectively, there is a bit of preparation required to ensure we meet our goals, and do so safely.
A couple of things I have been doing to prepare:
shed half of the 20 lb-post-holiday gains. The less I have to carry, the better! Also, I’m starting hydration practices now, and will continue to drink like a fish (I mean water, people) throughout the trip. I’ve also been walking 2-3 times a week at 2-4 miles per, just to get the legs in a little better shape. My hope is the walking in combination with about 25 minutes on the ol’ elliptical machine every weekday for the past few weeks will help me get to the summit, and back again without too much trouble.
Another key to making a successful hike like this is proper planning, or as one of my college instructors used to say: “Proper preparation prevents poor performance.” We have our menu (and corresponding grocery list) all planned out. We’ve coordinated gear and transportation and are in the final stages of packing this week.
For those of you who have pursued “aggressive for you” goals in the outdoors, what did you find worked the best? Any advice for those of us who love the outdoors but only get there a few times a year? Add your comments, we’d love to hear from you!
