Camping "Wisdom"

Marry an outdoors woman. Then if you throw her out into the yard on a cold night, she can still survive.

Camping for Mother's Day PDF Print E-mail

Many people wouldn't think of camping as a way to celebrate mother's day. But it can be a great way to make mom feel special and help her relax, at least if you camp like my wife! After I quickly installed the XM radio I purchased her for Mother's Day (which was a big hit, although she couldn't understand how it kept changing to a particular baseball game!) we headed down to The Broadmoor.

The Broadmoor is a five star resort here in Colorado. Next to a lake, with Pikes Peak as the P1000390 background, its an amazing 'camping' destination. We were only there for one night and half of today, but it was a great way to pamper mom. A great dinner last night, a spa appointment today, and a great quick trip overall.

I even found time to work in some more 'authentic' outdoor experiences. I took my youngest son to go explore the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. It was a great morning of crawling about through the 'houses' and talking to him about how people used to live. He really enjoyed being able to go into the various rooms, walking through the back pathways between buildings, etc. The craftsmanship in the buildings was amazing. As you walked through them, they reflected the advancing architecture and building skills of each time period. What was also apparent was what a difficult life it must have been. It was apparent that most of each day was spent working on mere survival, and the dwellings were built to allow for that and not much else. This was a relatively small group of dwellings, I can't imagine what Mesa Verde must be like! Maybe when the kids are older, we can head down and check that out too. Probably not for mother's day though!

I spent my Mother's Day outdoors, too, and I'd have to say it was one of the best yet. Looks like you did quite nicely! :)

Hey Debi, hope you had a great Mother's Day! We tried to balance the 'outdoor' time with the relaxing indoor time as much as we could. It was a quick trip, but it did work out nicely.

If my husband took me "camping" in this locale, I'd be a whole lot more likely to go (and enjoy it!)

Most mom's/spouses would be. I like to think of it as a desensitization program. Start top end, and slowly work to the outdoor/tent camping. Might take awhile to work through all the intermediate stages though!

Your husband is welcome to bring your family out to this locale anytime. So long as you agree to another trip out to either one of the 10th Mountain Division huts, or a Yurt. We'll skip a few stages of the program! :D

Oh alright, you can come out anytime, no strings attached.

I spent my mother's day outside, too, and it was wonderful. In our house I am the one who plans and organizes hikes and camping trips. We will wait a few more weeks for warmish weather to start camping, but I can't wait!

  • Marc  - Re: Mel

It's snowed here the last two days, so I'm all for waiting for warmer weather. Fortunately, our 'shelter' on this trip made the weather a non-issue. Good luck with your planning and organizing for the upcoming season. Hopefully warm weather is around the corner, we'll look forward to hearing about your trips!

I'm so jealous! My parents just got back from Chaco Canyon, last week, so I was looking at their pictures, too. There are so many great places I want to checkout, before the kids grow up!

Roy, I couldn't agree with you more. These dwellings were small overall. Everything there can be seen in these few pictures. It may me really want to take the kids to see Mesa Verde, which is a reasonable days drive from here. Great camping out that way too! Unfortunately, the kids seem to be growing up faster than I can find time to take our family around everywhere.
