Camping "Wisdom"

Now there is one outstandingly important fact regarding Spaceship Earth, and that is that no instruction book came with it.

I sometimes wonder if I'm doing a good job of imparting a love of camping on my son. Tonight was one of those occasions where I felt we really connected. After Mom left for a late work appointment, we dragged out a couple of folding chairs and sat in the back yard talking camping. Here are a few things I learned.

  • We need a new camp chair for The Boy... his old one is too small.
  • We need a new sleeping bag for The Boy... his old one is too small.
  • We both want an LED flashlight... but the little single-LED "pinch" lights are way cool.
  • Our first camping trip should be to a campground.
  • We're taking Mom camping this year... but the trip has to be to a campground with running water (including flush toilets and showers).
  • He wants to camp "in the woods" ... complete with a hole dug in the ground for a latrine.

So, in one short conversation we covered GAS, outback camping, and how to deal with our favorite female camper.

Yeah... I think I'm getting through to him.

Yeah, you are definitely putting him on the right path. Good job!

I had a similar situation with the wife/mother and ended up having to get a cabin complete with bathroom. I sleep in a tent along with my oldest son. Perhaps one day we can convince her to do the tent thing, but it is not looking good.

The last time my wife went "camping," my son (two at the time) threw up on her in the middle of the night. The time before that, she severed a tendon using the brand-new, razor-sharp swiss army knife I'd bought her.
The next time we go, I'm pretty sure it'll have to be near perfect to avoid any "three strikes and your out" metaphors.
Unfortunately I was too short-sighted include, "And go camping at least once a year" somewhere in our marriage vows.

I think more people would camp if they realized that it brings family together even AFTER the trip!

Actually, one of my favorite reasons to camp in a campground isn't running water OR bathrooms -- I like to be gone from camp nearly all day. Out exploring somewhere. And in a campground, there's always a "neighbor" you can ask to watch your stuff!

(Although running water and bathrooms ARE really nice!)

I agree, and we often spend a good part of our day wandering, skipping stones into a lake, searching for bugs, or a myriad of other things. Even in camp, preparing meals can make for some great "quality time." You're right about the difference the time together makes in so many aspects of our lives.
