Having lived three years in Columbia, Missouri, I can say that the Mark Twain National Forest (MTNF) is one of the prettiest, alluring, and peaceful of the National Forests I've been in (which is quite a few). One of my favorite memories involves hiking through the forest with a good friend and mentor, hunting down the numerous natural springs in the Ozarks. While its sometimes a slog to get there, the reward is always worth it.
The MTNF has six different Ranger Districts and covers various parts of the state. The National Forest Service is currently considering its Land Management strategy for the Cedar Creek portion of the forest, just south of Columbia. Apparently, this strategy might include clear cutting portions of the forest.
Now, I'm not the most educated person in terms of forestry and I'll admit that up front. However, I've watched as my old Boy Scout camp was "selectively" forested to improve its health and I can tell you that it was never the same (for the worse). That was some time ago, and it wasn't really supervised by anyone, so hopefully the Forest Service would do a better job. At any rate, I'd vote for a selective management process rather than clear cutting.
Here's a link to an article and radio story from KBIA.
