It's no secret that I'm amazed by Ed Stafford's monumental feat of walking the entire length of the Amazon River. Now he's been nominated for National Geographic's "Adventurer of the Year."

REI just started a new, Family Adventure Program. Looking to help you get your family outdoors more this summer, they offer a printable Kids Adventure Journal and suggestions for hikes and camping spots in your area. There is even an official Certificate of Completion you can download, fill out for your child, and print it out for them to hang up in their room! Lastly, there's a photo contest. Simply provide a photo of your family enjoying the outdoors and you are entered to win a $50 REI gift certificate! I've only spent a little bit of time exploring the program's web page, but it looks worth your time to check it out as well.

I've been posting a lot lately about the Bush Administrations Midnight Rules, specifically those focused on allowing additional oil and gas drilling on public lands. Recently, some of Clinton's own Midnight Rules are back in the news. In January of 2001, on their way out of the White House, the Clinton Administration enacted the Road-less Areas Conservation Rule (RACR) which was adopted by the US Forest Service. This rule essentially protected ~58 million acres of forest from roads, oil and gas drilling, mining, etc. Essentially placing these areas off limits for human development. However, shortly into his first term, Bush started trying to undo the RACR and continued this throughout his second term. This has played out through both government and the courts, with a new development happening just recently.
