My First Snowshoe Trip PDF Print E-mail

After his first snowshoe trip up at Brainard Lake Recreation Area, my oldest son decided he wanted to start his own web-page to detail his trips. Afraid of the competition, I told him he could be a Guest Author here on our blog. What follows is his story, as dictated by him and typed by me. While minor grammatical corrections might have slipped in, I tried my best to write down exactly what he said, exactly as he said it (as one long stream of thought).

Yesterday being Veteran's Day (and to all the veterans and men and women currently serving in the armed forces, thanks), I had the day off and decided to go out for a hike. I decided to head up to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area that is part of the Roosevelt National Forest, just outside of Ward, Colorado. I could only be out for half a day, but the trip proved to be well worth it. The weather was perfect, I was able to try out some new gear, and I had a couple of interesting encounters with wildlife.

The Devils Head Lookout Tower is the last active fire tower on the Front Range. Originally built in 1912, it was stationed by Helen Dowe, the first female fire lookout ranger in the U.S. It was rebuilt in 1951 and is now operated by Fire Ranger Bill. I knew we were too late to meet Bill (the tower closes for winter on October 1st of each year), but I really wanted to get make the trip. I've tried several times with the boys but have never made it more than half way. With the youngest staying with grandma and grandpa for the weekend, I thought I would use the opportunity to spend some quality time with our older son and see if we couldn't finally make it all the way to the top

As the boys get older, and it gets easier for one parent to keep up with them, I'm hoping to get back into backpacking as well as one day trips. As a gage of my current physical shape, as well as the state of my current gear, I decided to load up a backpack and hit a short trail nearby. I learned some new things, and relearned some others, the hard way.

Furlough Fishing PDF Print E-mail

With Tuesday off as the first of four furlough days over the next four months, I decided to make good use of it. First off, I was able to walk my kids to school today, always a good time. Then, I ran a couple of errands to get us ready for a 4x4 outing that would take us to Loch Lomond for an afternoon of fishing.
