Ten Essentials: Sun Protection PDF Print E-mail

Continuing on in breaking down the Ten Essentials to follow when heading outdoors, number two on the list is Sun Protection. Depending on where you live, this may be more or less important. Here in the high county, its critical year round. I have to admit though, until I started researching more for this article, I didn't realize just how much there is to this "simple" task.

Ten Essentials: Navigational Knowledge PDF Print E-mail

In breaking down the Ten Essentials you need when heading outdoors, I last talked about the gear you would need for Navigation. Today I'm going to spend some time talking about basic knowledge you need to use that gear. Because GPS devices are so different, I won't spend any time on them. You'll need to refer to the manual. Instead, I'm going to focus on the tried and trusted map and compass. While some information was covered last time (mainly, what to look for when purchasing), we're going to look at what you need to know to use your map and compass. As a reminder, reading this blog won't prepare you to head out this weekend, but it will give you enough to start practicing in a safe environment.

Shopping for a Five-Year-Old PDF Print E-mail

I have the great pleasure of being in charge of the camping gear purchase for my son this holiday season. He has been begging me for weeks for a compass, and I've been putting him off with the old standby, "It's too close to Christmas for me to buy you anything right now." Meanwhile, I'm as giddy as the proverbial schoolgirl to get him some camping gear that he'll enjoy and will resurrect his joy that started to sprout last Spring.

If you're reading this blog, chances are you're like us: you love taking your family out camping and cherish the memories you create each time you head out. You probably even have any number of photos, capturing the ever expanding outdoor adventures of your family. Your kids first hike, the first fish they caught, first deer bagged, first peak bagged, etc. But have you ever thought about the sense of terror that would rip out your gut if you logged onto your computer to look through your family pictures, but instead only found an empty file structure? Just a shell sitting there, allowing you to click through them, staring unbelievably at empty folders. Yep, you guessed it. That happened to me tonight. Fortunately, my terror was minimized as I had just recently finished backing up all of our family photos on SmugMug.com.

Ten Essentials: Navigational Gear PDF Print E-mail

First on the list of the Ten Essentials System is Navigation. This is a big topic, so I'll be splitting it up into several posts: one for the actual gear, and one to provide an overview of the knowledge needed to use the gear. Navigating through the wilderness, whether by GPS, map and compass, or both, is a tricky task that requires knowledge, the right gear, advanced planning, and lots of practice. Orienteering is definitely a skill that requires actual field use to really learn. Reading this (or any) blog alone won't prepare you to head out into the wilderness safely. The intent is to make you aware of what you do need to know, and encourage you to go learn these skills prior to heading out on anything more that the simplest hike through a city park. So, let's tackle the gear you're going to need.

The Ten Essentials list was created by a climbing organization (The Mountaineers) to help make sure people would have the basic tools necessary to respond to unforeseen events while out hiking, camping, hunting, etc. The list includes items that you should always have with you when you go to enjoy the outdoors. In our last poll, we provided a list of 11 categories and asked which one is not on the list, and the correct answer was: Communication.

YAKTRAX Pro Shoe Crampon PDF Print E-mail

The YAKTRAX Pro shoe crampon is a lightweight traction assistance device designed to slip over most shoes and hiking boots. The design is a single piece of rubber that has a criss-cross pattern across the bottom and wider sides designed to slip up over the toe, sides, and heel of your footwear. The sections that criss-cross the bottom have a long piece of steel that coils around them from one end to the other. As you walk through your normal gate, the pressure pushes the various parts of the steel coil down into the packed snow and/or ice, providing the traction. The design is wonderfully simple and ingenious at the same time, with the makers claiming it provides up to 10 times the traction of the various micro-spiked versions made by competitors. Overall, it fared well on my one limited trip with them, but there are some concerns as well.
