How is it that one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

GoLite Phantasm Jacket PDF Print E-mail

Produced by GoLite, the Phantasm is a waterproof phantasmhard shell designed for those looking to keep their gear light. GoLite claims the Phantasm is recommended by NOLS instructors for the NOLS Fast and Light Backpacking Course. Weighing in at just 10oz, its a 100% nylon, PacLite shell with a GoreTex lining. Weight is reduced by keeping features to a minimum. It has a hood with a visor, two pockets, a cinch cord at the waist, taped seams, and a water tight front zipper. There are no zips anywhere for ventilation, but they claim its highly breathable; enough so that you won't get "clammy" during even hard exertion. They claim its good for wet and cold weather, and has a lifetime guarantee on both the waterproof and breath-ability claims. Of course, I didn't know any of this when I purchased it. I just saw a great sale.

From here in the Front Range, sights of P1010025 the snow  capped peaks are evidence that summer, and our short lived fall, are almost over. Actually, fall this year has been tremendous. Delicious weather and gorgeous colors in the Aspens. But you can tell that is about to end  very soon. With this in mind, I decided to try and accomplish one last camping goal that I had for this season: climbing another fourteener. That's how I found myself waking up at 4:45 a.m. this past Sunday, climbing into some semi-winter gear, and heading up into the mountains to climb Grays and Torreys Peaks.

Before our annual trip this year, I was looking all over the place for my old dry bag. I bought it a few years ago for a rafting trip, but it seemed to have migrated to someplace hidden. I started looking around online and in some of the local stores for a replacement, and I was surprised to find that the technology has changed quite a bit in the passing years.

As Marc noted in his last post, our annual trip took us to the Allegheny River, in western Pennsylvania. Four of us met in Cleveland the night of 7/21, and then headed to PA the morning of the 22nd, where we met up with Kevin, who came from eastern PA. With one canoe among us, we had to rent two more to accommodate 5 people and our gear, food, and sundries. We spent two nights on the river, and

I do miss you, my old friend. In the early days, you weighed a lot and couldn't come on hikes, but as I got older, the ability to hike a long distance didn't seem as important. We would stay close to the car and use you for grilling sausages or frying vegetables for fajitas. You were the perfect size for warming tortillas for breakfast burritos.

October 1, 2010 marked a significant change in the way that State Park Passes are issued. Previously, you would buy a daily pass for about $6 or an annual pass for about $24 (I didn't check the numbers, I'm just working from memory). Starting this month, Michigan Recreation Passports are sold with your license plate renewal. The new cost is $10 per vehicle, or $5 for motorcycles.

There might not be a lot of posting over the weekend, as we are all headed out for the 2010 CEJCamping trek! As you know, each year we select a different national forest and head out for a long weekend of catching up and R&R. This year, we'll be taking a canoe trip down the Allegheny River. We have some new gear and food options that we'll be testing out along the way, so be sure to check back next week for the trip report and reviews! In the meantime, you can track our trip via Twitter.
