Camping "Wisdom"

I got into an argument with a girlfriend inside of a tent.  That's a bad place for an argument, because then I tried to walk out and slammed the flap.  How are you supposed to express your anger in this situation?  Zipper it up really quick?

My wife's family would fly across the street or to run errands if P1000751 they could, so most of our family vacations tend to involve air travel. However, I love a good road trip. So this year, I strongly suggested that we drive for our trip to Gull Lake in Minnesota. After some early, and repeated, attempts to sway me away from my idea, I managed to stay steadfast in my determination to drive. So last Saturday we loaded up the car and set out, determined to have our kids experience the Great American Road Trip.

As you can see by the certificate pictured to the right, devilsHead we made it  up to the top of the Devil's Head Fire Tower and were able to meet Fire Ranger Bill. I'm very excited that we achieved a couple of our camping goals for this summer, but the trip itself didn't exactly go as planned. In fact, it didn't go anything like it was planned. In the end, that was the best thing that could have happened.

Guidelines For Ultralight Family Camping PDF Print E-mail

Having convinced myself that Ultralight Family Camping is the way to go, I decided to try and figure out exactly what it is. Ultralight backpacking involves trying to get your base pack weight (before food and water) down as low as you can. With the family involved, this doesn't really seem like a smart decision. So, I've created some basic rules to guide my selection of gear and methods as I create my own style of Ultralight Family Camping.

For my backpacking trip to the Lost Creek Wilderness, I decided bearkeg to try out the Counter Assault Bear Keg. Typically I hang my food when backpacking where there are bears, but in some areas of the country (Yosemite, Yellowstone, and parts of the Adirondacks) back country campers are required to use a bear resistant container. Curious to see what it would be like to use one, I rented a Bear Keg from our local REI. After all, it was a short hike and a one night trip, so even if I didn't like it, it wouldn't be a horrible experience.

This Saturday, June 26th, 2010, is the Great American Backyard Campout. The event is organized by the National Wildlife Federation, and currently sponsored by American Girl. The main goal is to help parents get their kids outdoors, followed by the hope that it will get kids hooked on outdoor time. They are encouraging parents to get their kids out to camp in their backyard, local park, forest, etc. Their web page is pretty cool, and offers a host of additional features.

As I get back into backpacking, I'm quickly discovering the rational behind ultralight backpacking. Lugging a 40 lb pack makes a trip a lot less enjoyable. Most ultralight fans will aim for a pack weight of 15 to 20 lbs, and that is for a long weekend to a week long trip. Now, I'm not suggesting we are going to get family camping gear down that low. Far from it. But, as I have been researching ultralight concepts more closely, I have made a personal commitment to extend them into the realm of family camping. I'm not exactly sure what this means just yet, but I'm committed to figuring it out and talking about it. Before that, lets start with the top 5 reasons to practice Ultralight Family Camping.

I sometimes wonder if I'm doing a good job of imparting a love of camping on my son. Tonight was one of those occasions where I felt we really connected. After Mom left for a late work appointment, we dragged out a couple of folding chairs and sat in the back yard talking camping. Here are a few things I learned.
