Camping "Wisdom"

The fire is the main comfort of the camp, whether in summer or winter, and is about as ample at one season as at another. It is as well for cheerfulness as for warmth and dryness.

REI just started a new, Family Adventure Program. Looking to help you get your family outdoors more this summer, they offer a printable Kids Adventure Journal and suggestions for hikes and camping spots in your area. There is even an official Certificate of Completion you can download, fill out for your child, and print it out for them to hang up in their room! Lastly, there's a photo contest. Simply provide a photo of your family enjoying the outdoors and you are entered to win a $50 REI gift certificate! I've only spent a little bit of time exploring the program's web page, but it looks worth your time to check it out as well.

Thoughts on my HTC Incredible PDF Print E-mail

About three weeks ago, I bit the bullet and upgraded my venerable Blackberry Curve to a new HTC Incredible. The web is chock full of reviews of this new Android "super phone" (sometimes dubbed the "Droid Incredible")  so I'm not going to get into a full evaluation of it. What I want to do is keep a few notes as to whether this might be something worth taking on a camping trip.

Nothing can spoil a nice relaxing evening around the campfire like a hoard of pesky mosquitos. After we decided last year to spend our camping weekend on an island I figured insect repellent might play an important part. Of course I could have purchased a couple of varieties of aerosols, but I really wanted to try something different.

E Note: Ten Favorite Non-Traditional Campfire Songs PDF Print E-mail

The overall experience of camping isn't necessarily about location, gear or food.  It's about how you occupy your time while enjoying the outdoors.  There have been articles about recipes, books and locations posted here and many other websites across the 'net.  I have read and reread these articles, which I find entertaining and informative.  So, when encouraged by the other members of CEJ camping to create "something like a top 10 list", I decided to go with something "obscure".  I chose to go with a list of songs we have sung at one time or another during the late night campfies.  Maybe obscure isn't the correct term to describe my list, but I had a lot of fun creating it and hope you all enjoy.  The topic is broad enough for anybody to weigh in with their opinions, which is what I'm going for.  So, light up a long nine (I've always wanted to say that :-), and let's see what you think.

Lost Creek Wilderness PDF Print E-mail

If you're ever in Colorado looking for a great backpacking trip, IMGP5487this is the one. Located in the Pike National Forest, the Lost Creek Wilderness was created by the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1980. Its only about a two hour drive from Denver and Colorado Springs, and offers around 100 miles of hiking trails. On the right trail, it also offers incredible views of huge granite boulders stacked in ways that makes it look more like a Hollywood movie set than a wilderness area. I've wanted to see this area for awhile now, so last weekend I headed out for a quick backpacking trip.

May 11, 2010 marked the 100th anniversary of Glacier National Park. I remember reading an article somewhere on the Internets that talked about the effects of climate change on the remnant glaciers there, and that they would only be around for another ten years.

Camping for Mother's Day PDF Print E-mail

Many people wouldn't think of camping as a way to celebrate mother's day. But it can be a great way to make mom feel special and help her relax, at least if you camp like my wife! After I quickly installed the XM radio I purchased her for Mother's Day (which was a big hit, although she couldn't understand how it kept changing to a particular baseball game!) we headed down to The Broadmoor.
