Half bored, I was browsing my bookshelf earlier this evening when my well worn, Third Edition Boy Scouts of America Fieldbook grabbed my attention. Its stained, torn, bent, burnt, etc. Just like a good resource manual should be. Its also way outdated, being published in 1984. Flipping through it, I noticed two things: 1) even for the mid-eighties, the pictures used in the book are ridiculous (the late seventies/early eighties were not kind to fashion) and, 2) there are some interesting and helpful tips in this thing! One that caught my attention was a way of telling the wind speed just from things around you.

Anyone with kids knows that they grow. Fast. Clothes you buy in the spring may well not fit by fall. So why spend top dollar on camping clothing that, at most, will see one season of duty? Here is my selection for a great, inexpensive alternative to name brand outdoor clothing for kids.

Colorado is fortunate to have seven National Forests that offer some of the most pristine wilderness found anywhere. Earlier this month, Colorado submitted a request to Agriculture Secretary Vilsack asking him to adopt Colorado's Roadless Rules, which seek to protect just over four (4) million acres of roadless areas within those National Forests. This is an important issue locally and nationally. The U.S. Forest Service has built and maintains approximately 374,883 miles of road within the National Forests. Lay them out end to end and you could travel around the world 15 times! One estimate has suggested that only 6% of Colorado's National Forests lay more two (2) miles from a road. More importantly, roads may be the single most important object that falls squarely between the Forest Service's role of maintaining the multi-use of our public lands.

After his first snowshoe trip up at Brainard Lake Recreation Area, my oldest son decided he wanted to start his own web-page to detail his trips. Afraid of the competition, I told him he could be a Guest Author here on our blog. What follows is his story, as dictated by him and typed by me. While minor grammatical corrections might have slipped in, I tried my best to write down exactly what he said, exactly as he said it (as one long stream of thought).

A few years ago my favorite pair of hiking boots gave out. I had picked up a cheap pair at an REI garage sale, and they worked fine for family camping and short hikes. Having decided to try and get back into more serious hiking, trekking and the likes, I decided it was time to make the investment in a new, good pair of boots. Having just waded through all the choices out there, I thought I would post some thoughts on how to go about choosing the best boot for you.

Its spring, and everyone is busy sketching out their plans and goals for the 2010 summer camping season. In the last book review I talked briefly about how a theory of hope can help make sure you achieve your goals and have a great season. This is especially true for those of you trying to introduce kids or a significant other to one of your favorite activities. Today we'll spend more time learning how to apply some of the concepts. By the way, if you have kids, try to involve them in as many of these activities as possible, it will help them learn valuable life skills and start to help them lead a life filled with hope!
