Terrible tag line notwithstanding, Smokey Bear has been a fixture in the camping world for longer than I've been alive. This year, he turns 65 and the celebration will be held in the Wayne National Forest (in Ohio). Smokey was "born" on August 9th, 1944.
I toyed with the idea of putting this in the "recipes" section of the site, but really, I just poured in the seasoning packet and called it good, so it's not a recipe in the strictest sense. Then I went to "blog" but realized that a cooking gear review might be the most appropriate.

Hope springs eternal. I'm sure you've all heard the saying. But have you ever stopped to think about what hope really is? In his book, "The Psychology of Hope: You Can Get Here from There", C.R. Snyder did just that. But you didn't come here looking for hope, you came looking for information about camping and getting your family outdoors, so you're probably wondering (with all due apologies to Tina Turner), what's hope got to do with it? Well, quite a bit actually.
Congratulations to Melynda over at Your Wild Child for being the commentor randomly selected to receive a free copy of the S'mores card game created by Education Outdoors when its released in May of this year. S'mores is a fun filled, camping oriented card game designed to help families spend time together while getting excited about the outdoors. In case you missed it, you can check out our review of the game, and Mel's winning comment, here!
"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success."
Next week, March 15-21, is National Wildlife Week. To help you get excited and create a successful plan to get your family outdoors to celebrate, I've put together a couple of good resources. These include Let's Go Outside, Where the Other You Lives, and Be Out There.
Well, I think about camping a lot, but this was a little more specific. What sorts of things do I want to accomplish in 2010 from a camping standpoint? My son gets more and more excited about overnight trips, and the love of the outdoors is certainly something I want to impart. I started to put together a list of what camping-related activities I wanted to complete this year. The weather is starting to warm up, and our first trip should be right around the corner. Here is what I have so far:
They say timing is everything in humor, and so it is. After writing about Gear Addiction Syndrome, what should appear in my mailbox today? Why the Backpacker Magazine Gear Guide, complete with their Editor's Choice Awards. As a result, I spent the entire night doing my first read-through of it and accomplished absolutely nothing on my to-do list. For those trying to follow along on the GAGS scale, I read all of the advertisements, and the articles! Not really sure what category that places me in, but I'm fairly certain its a low score. Its also causing me to update my gear wish list.
By the way, did I mention REI dividends come out next month?!
