Since we're going to miss the Great American Backyard Campout this year, a couple of us decided that it would be a great idea to take our boys camping for Fathers' Day this year. Eric and I made reservations months ago, and dragged our sons into the great outdoors for a couple of days (and just one night).

After his first snowshoe trip up at Brainard Lake Recreation Area, my oldest son decided he wanted to start his own web-page to detail his trips. Afraid of the competition, I told him he could be a Guest Author here on our blog. What follows is his story, as dictated by him and typed by me. While minor grammatical corrections might have slipped in, I tried my best to write down exactly what he said, exactly as he said it (as one long stream of thought).

There aren't many states where you can watch both the sun rise and sun set over water. Michigan falls into this category, and it's been a goal of mine for the last few years to make it happen. When a planned trip to New Hampshire fell through due to a bout of appendicitis striking the ride planner, several of us decided to take advantage of the opportunity to ride around the coast of the Michigan Lower Peninsula.

If you're ever in Colorado looking for a great backpacking trip, this is the one. Located in the Pike National Forest, the Lost Creek Wilderness was created by the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1980. Its only about a two hour drive from Denver and Colorado Springs, and offers around 100 miles of hiking trails. On the right trail, it also offers incredible views of huge granite boulders stacked in ways that makes it look more like a Hollywood movie set than a wilderness area. I've wanted to see this area for awhile now, so last weekend I headed out for a quick backpacking trip.

My wife's family would fly across the street or to run errands if they could, so most of our family vacations tend to involve air travel. However, I love a good road trip. So this year, I strongly suggested that we drive for our trip to Gull Lake in Minnesota. After some early, and repeated, attempts to sway me away from my idea, I managed to stay steadfast in my determination to drive. So last Saturday we loaded up the car and set out, determined to have our kids experience the Great American Road Trip.
